From New Zealand to Fiji: A Dream We Didn’t Want to Wake Up From

After a quick flight from New Zealand, we landed in Fiji and immediately felt the shift—stepping off the plane into warm, humid, 90-degree air that somehow felt like a welcome embrace. We grabbed a taxi and headed straight to our hotel on Denarau Island, a man-made island filled with beautiful resorts. While there wasn’t a traditional beach, the water was still stunning, and everything about the atmosphere felt like a true escape.

Our time on Denarau was easy and relaxing. Days were spent at swim-up bars, splashing in the shallow ends of pools, and letting the boys enjoy kids club while we soaked it all in. The heat was intense compared to New Zealand, but it was the kind you settle into quickly—the kind that slows you down in the best way.

One of the highlights was a farm dinner excursion on the island. It was more than just a meal—it was an experience. There was dancing, singing, and fire performances, but what stood out most was the music. Fijian music doesn’t just play in the background—it moves through you. The harmonies, the emotion, the way people sing with their whole hearts… it’s something you feel deep in your soul. It’s hard to describe, but unforgettable once you experience it.

The Journey to Blue Lagoon

Our next adventure took us to the Blue Lagoon, and getting there was an experience in itself. We woke up early and made our way to the marina to board a ferry for a five-hour journey across the islands. Knowing it would be a long ride, we upgraded to the captain’s lounge—and it was worth every dollar. Air conditioning, drinks, and a comfortable space made all the difference.

Rachel wasn’t feeling her best and battled some boat sickness, but she kept making her way up to the top deck to take in the views—and there were plenty. The ferry stopped at multiple islands along the way, picking up and dropping off travelers. It felt like a moving window into island life, with endless turquoise water and lush landscapes.

We also met some amazing people on the boat—Claudia and Rob—who ended up heading to the same destination as us. Instant connection, and easily some of our favorite people from the trip.

Life at the Blue Lagoon

Arriving at the Blue Lagoon felt like stepping into a postcard. It was truly breathtaking. We spent six nights there, and it was nothing short of magical.

The boys immediately fell in love with kids club and couldn’t wait to go each day. They formed quick friendships and created their own little world—collecting crabs on the beach, building intricate sand mazes for them to race through, and making bracelets and necklaces out of shells. They even had some quiet time watching TV in the afternoons, which they loved after long, hot days of playing.

They also bonded with Loewatta, who took such great care of them and made their experience even more special. Watching them become independent, confident, and completely immersed in island life was incredible.

While the boys were off having their adventures, Evan and I found moments to slow down too. We played games, hiked to the top of the hill behind our resort, went snorkeling, and I treated myself to a few massages. We even had two evenings to ourselves at the resort’s “fancy” dinner, which felt like such a gift—time to reconnect and just be together.

Adventures and Core Memories

We took a family excursion to the Blue Lagoon caves, which turned out to be one of the most unique experiences of the trip. Swimming into the caves felt a little intimidating at first, but the guides were incredibly supportive and reassuring. They gently encouraged us, knowing how manageable it really was, and stayed with us the entire time. In the end, it was absolutely amazing.

Snorkeling became another highlight—especially for the boys. Wes was a bit hesitant at first, but Boone fully embraced it. Watching him discover the underwater world—the fish, the colors, the movement—was pure magic. His squeals of excitement were everything. He was so proud of himself, and honestly, it was one of those core memories I’ll carry forever. I even found myself tearing up just watching his joy.

The Unexpected Moments

Not everything went exactly as planned, of course. Halfway through our stay, Wes woke up with an earache, and I had to take him to see the local doctor. It turned into one of the most eye-opening experiences of the trip.

The doctor was incredibly kind and attentive, and confirmed he had an ear infection. She treated him right away, and the entire visit—including medication—cost just $40. The experience itself was humbling, but what really stood out was the warmth of the community. When we arrived in town, local kids came up to Wes, hugging him and showing him so much love. It was such a pure, genuine moment—one that perfectly reflected the heart of the Fijian people.

They truly are something special.

Soaking It All In

The rest of our days were filled with everything you’d hope for in a place like this—swimming, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and climbing on the floating obstacle course. Every moment felt simple and full at the same time.

And somewhere in the middle of all this beauty, I celebrated my 39th birthday. It couldn’t have been more perfect. I was showered with birthday wishes, treated to a massage, and felt completely celebrated and loved. It was one of those birthdays that makes you pause and feel deeply grateful for where you are and who you’re with.

Leaving a Piece of Our Hearts Behind

Fiji gave us so much more than a vacation. It gave us connection, joy, rest, adventure, and perspective. It reminded us how powerful kindness and community can be, and how important it is to slow down and truly be present.

It’s hard to put into words just how special it was—but I know one thing for sure:

See you again soon. Thanks for the Magic!
